Starring Sammie - as the girl who becomes a big fat liar but whose pants don't catch fire) book cover

What's it all about?

Ten year old Sammie Wesley lives at home with her spendthrift mum and two older sisters, Gemma and Sasha. Sammie's dad has just split up from her mum and Sammie is still bruised from that, especially as Sammie's mum spends so much time at 'Mingles for Singles' looking for a new boyfriend. Things look up a little bit when Sammie starts the After School club. She really loves it there, mixing with kids of all ages and doing lots of fun activities but then she messes up... big time. Will that be the end of the only part of Sammie's life where she feels at ease?

'This is a very touching book and it shows how telling lies could affect you. It tells how you can get into problems when you lie, and how you get found out. It shows that we need to think about our actions sometimes. The book is a must read. I recommend that everyone of every age, culture and religion should read it.'

Where did the idea come from?

I wanted to kick off the After School Club series with the main character looking at the club from the outside in. When Sammie enters that mobile hut on the edge of the school playground for the first time, we see it through her eyes and live the experience with her.

'Starring Sammie' was a World Book Day Recommended Read for 2004
